The Christmas Revels

The Christmas Revels

An English Celebration of the Winter Solstice

SAVE THE DATE! December 21-23, 2019

NEW LOCATION! Lebanon Opera House, Lebanon, NH

It is December 26th in a small town in Northern England at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Workers at the textile mill are enjoying the last hours of their Christmas holiday. The factory owner, none-to-pleased with the celebratory mood, brings his workers back to the reality of their lives inside the factory walls. Despite his controlling presence, the workers are hopeful and resilient. Helped along by the hands of Fate, their ability to celebrate life’s beautiful moments prevail in the 45th Christmas Revels.

Join us for the first time at historic Lebanon Opera House in Lebanon, NH, for a raucous, romantic, and inspiring celebration, with all of the pageantry and tradition that defines The Christmas Revels. Audience singalongs, children’s singing games, a mummers play, the mysterious Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, and Susan Cooper’s poem “The Shortest Day” will weave together with an engaging story of struggle and the strength of the human spirit in this original production by Revels North.

What is The Christmas Revels?

The Christmas Revels, a beloved Upper Valley tradition for the whole family, is presented annually by Revels North. We celebrate the holiday season and the turning of the year with singing, dancing, and traditions that span the centuries and the globe. Recent performances have featured the stories, music and traditions of the Northlands, Québec, Ireland, Appalachia, England, and Venice. After over forty years of performances at the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College, we will be bringing The Christmas Revels to historic Lebanon Opera House in 2019.
The Christmas Revels would not be possible without the participation of dozens of children, teens, and adults who take on acting roles, join the chorus, and volunteer with costuming, makeup and hair styling. Auditions for the Christmas Revels take place in late spring; rehearsals begin in September.
